Newark advances proposal to tax the University of Delaware

Newark’s effort to gain the power to tax the University of Delaware moved forward Monday, as the city took its boldest step yet toward forcing the university to pay what officials say is its fair share.

With dozens of UD students packed into council chambers to protest the measure, council unanimously approved a resolution asking the state legislature to amend Newark’s charter to allow the city to assess a per-student tax on the university.

If approved by the legislature and signed by the governor, the charter amendment would allow Newark to charge UD a tax of up to $50 per student, per semester.
