14 ways campus career offices are serving students during school closures: Ideas 6 to 8

With campuses closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, career services teams have gotten creative about delivering programs virtually, including finding ways for students to still have virtual internship experiences

In-person opportunities typically dominate campus career services offerings at colleges and universities. But as campuses closed this March, these teams had to pivot to a virtual-only model. Here are several actions to consider based on ways career services offices have been delivering services during the pandemic. Click on the links below for ideas 1 to 5 and 9 to 14.

6. Ask companies with strong internship program relationships to go virtual. In Boston, many Bunker Hill Community College internship partners committed to continuing experiential learning opportunities while offices are shut down. BHCC’s internships website includes WebEx-based info sessions for students. At Daemen College in New York, only a few companies allowed students to transition to remote internship experiences for spring 2020, and most canceled summer internship programs, but career services staff are working to convince companies to change their minds about summer experiences to make them remote, says Director Lamark Shaw.

7. Work with outside partners to offer virtual internships. Upkey’s Virtual Internship Program, created in partnership with The Academy Group and with the help of faculty from multiple universities and business schools, is open to thousands of students as of its June 1 start date. Each week, participants will learn from expert sources, conduct research and complete interactive projects.

8. Create micro-internships since not all traditional ones can be available virtually. Daemen College Career Services is working with department chairs, advisors, faculty and company partners to create such opportunities, as well as rigorous professional development classes, for students at the New York institution.
