College faculty learn to embed career guidance in instruction

Up to 500 faculty at 25 higher ed institutions will become better equipped to help students prepare for career and workplace success.

They’ll take a course covering career readiness and related skills, as part of the new Consortium for Instructional Excellence and Career Guidance, an initiative from the Council of Independent Colleges in partnership with the Association of College and University Educators.

It is funded by a $1.2 million Strada Education Network grant.

The program teaches faculty to design an effective course and class, establish a productive learning environment, use active learning techniques, promote higher-order thinking and assess students to inform instruction and promote learning.

Two modules will specifically address career readiness:

  • Embedding Career Guidance covers how to provide frequent, course-embedded information about specific careers for which the discipline prepares students.
  • Preparing Students with 21st-Century Career-Ready Skills aids faculty in designing course content to ensure students develop (and are assessed on) skills needed for their careers.
