While U.S. colleges and universities overall have entered a predicted and protracted period of enrollment decline, religious and faith-based schools generally continue decades of growth. More than 850 FBCUs are home to about 1.8 million students.

The Commission on Faith-Based Colleges and Universities, created by the American Council on Education, works to raise awareness of FBCUs and promote collaboration between religious and nonreligious institutions on topics such as access, affordability and completion. Commission members recently gathered in Washington, D.C., where they previewed the first installment of “HIGHER ed: The Power of Faith-Inspired Learning,” a three-part documentary by BYUtv at Brigham Young University in Utah. The entire production is publicly available via multiple digital media platforms, satellite and cable.

Students are increasingly connecting higher ed to values formation and moral clarity, according to research by Ryan P. Burge, professor of practice at the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis in Missouri. Research reveals connections between religion, faith and flourishing, Burge notes, making FBCUs an attractive option for many students.
