George W. Hynd named the sixth president of Oakland University

George W. Hynd has been named the sixth president of Oakland University (Mich.), succeeding Betty J. Youngblood, interim president since July 2013.

Hynd formerly served as provost and executive vice president of academic affairs for the College of Charleston (S.C.). There, he created new undergraduate and graduate degree programs in African American studies, exercise science, archeology, public administration and finance. He also launched a degree completion program aimed at adult learners. Hynd begins at Oakland on Aug. 15.

  • In July, Donald J. Laackman began his tenure as the eighth president of Champlain College (Vt.), succeeding David F. Finney, who retired on June 30 after nine years. Laackman came from Harold Washington College in Chicago, where he had been president since 2011.
  • Theodora Kalikow, president of the University of Southern Maine, stepped down to become the vice chancellor and president emerita of the University of Maine System.
  • Spelman College (Ga.) President Beverly Tatum announced in July that she plans to retire from the historically black, all-female institution in June 2015.
  • Chukuka S. Enwemeka, former dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, joined San Diego State University as provost and senior vice president on July 1. —Lauren Williams
