Tennessee Board of Regents names Flora Tydings higher ed chancellor

Flora Tydings is Tennessee Board of Regents’ new chancellor, responsible for leading six universities, 13 community colleges and 27 colleges of applied technology. Tydings plans to improve the student experience by strengthening the link between colleges and employers.

One goal is to analyze student achievement to identify initiatives that improve graduation rates and solve other higher ed challenges in Tennessee.

Tydings’ gained prominence in Tennessee after she was named president of Chattanooga State Community College. Before her appointment there, she was president of Athens Technical College in Georgia.

Other previous roles include serving as interim president at two other institutions in that state, Georgia Technical College and Sandersville Technical College.

  • Shaun R. Harper has founded the University of Southern California Race and Equity Center at the Rossier School of Education, intended as a resource for university leaders nationwide. Harper intends to launch the National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates survey on students’ racial experiences and sense of belonging on campuses.
  • Molly Corbett Broad will step down as American Council on Education president on October 31. Broad is credited with modernizing the GED testing program and creating more flexible pathways to college degrees and credentials for nontraditional learners.
