Summer Running Start classes give Washington students bigger jump on college

When she graduates this spring, Katelyn Thomas will have both a high school diploma and an associate degree, and enough credits to race through a bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington in two years. If all goes as planned, she’ll have a master’s degree in architecture when she’s 21 years old.

She’s been taking Running Start and College in the High School classes throughout her high school years, leading to the associate degree, saving at least $20,000 by her mom’s estimate.

Here’s what made this easier for her: a summer expansion of Running Start, the 35-year-old program that allows high school students to take courses in community colleges and get both high school and college credit. Now, kids can go to community college during summer break tuition-free.
