Some American student loan borrowers face an important deadline if they want their loan forgiveness to be processed and avoid major financial penalties.
People enrolled in the SAVE play who already qualify for forgiveness—meaning they have made 300 qualifying payments—need to apply to switch to a different income-driven repayment plan by the end of December to be shielded from tax liability associated with income-driven replayment discharges.
In shorter terms—act before Dec. 31, 2025 to avoid a tax bomb.
