David W. Andrews takes lead at National University

McHenry County College in Illinois and Unity College in Maine choose new leaders

David W. Andrews begins his term as president of National University in California April 1.

Formerly the dean and a professor at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education, he led that institution to No. 1 U.S. News rankings two years in a row. He promoted “smart growth” strategies in enrollment and program development and raised an average of $10 million per year.

In more than three decades, Andrews has held a range of academic and leadership posts in higher ed. He is a founding member of Deans for Impact, a national organization of educators dedicated to improving teacher preparation.

Prior to Johns Hopkins, he led a merger of the colleges of education and human ecology at The Ohio State University, and was founding director of the Center for Learning Excellence there.

Andrews succeeds Michael R. Cunningham, who will become chancellor of the National University System.

  • McHenry County College in Illinois selected a new president, Clinton Gabbard, who took office January 1. He had formerly served as vice president of student services at Lake Michigan College, and replaces Vicky Smith, who retired.
  • At Unity College in Maine, Melik Peter Khoury started a 30-month interim presidency on January 1. Formerly senior VP of external affairs and executive VP and CFO of the college, he succeeds Stephen Mulkey, who retired in December.
  • Lynn Pasquerella will begin serving as the 14th president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities on July 1. Pasquerella has been president of her alma mater, Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, since 2010.
