Claire Sterk named president of Emory University

Also: Ingrid Thompson-Sellers becomes interim president at South Georgia State College

Claire Sterk is the new president of Emory University in Atlanta, effective September 1.

Currently provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, Sterk’s long-range plan includes increasing diversity of staff and students, improving access, making the university more affordable, and strengthening Emory’s healthcare programs.

Sterk has been at Emory since 1995, when she joined the Rollins School of Public Health faculty, and is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Public Health, holding additional faculty appointments in anthropology and sociology, as well as in women’s, gender and sexuality studies.

  • Ingrid Thompson-Sellers is the interim president of South Georgia State College, where she has served since 1998, most recently as senior associate dean and professor of building information systems.
  • Paul W. Ferguson is the founding dean of the School of Science, Technology and Health at Biola University in California. He was recently president at Ball State University in Indiana. During his career, he has led, developed and restructured health sciences programs and overseen the initiation of new science-related degrees.
