NJ restores $20 million to community college funding for 2026

Community colleges will have more financial stability heading into the next school year after state lawmakers restored some proposed budget cuts.

During budget hearings, Republican and Democratic lawmakers agreed on the importance of funding for higher education, especially for community colleges. They restored some of Gov. Phil Murphy’s proposed cuts, but the budget still includes cuts to financial aid, including to the Community College Opportunity Grant, which helps reduce out-of-pocket costs to attend two-year colleges.

Community colleges will receive the same amount of operating aid as in the last two fiscal years.
