New higher ed budget would boost college, university funding

The Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee on Education voted to approve a $3.67 billion budget for the Higher Education Coordinating Commission, which distributes funding to public colleges and universities.

The budget represents a 10% increase over what state budget experts said is needed to continue offering current programs and services. That includes a bump for community colleges and universities, an additional $100 million in financial aid for low-income students and some ongoing support for a grant that covers the cost of college for members of Oregon’s nine tribes.
