Washburn University condemns anti-transgender event, speaker hosted by Republican students

President says: 'While we support the right to speak freely, Washburn University does not condone the hate and misinformation spread by the speaker and his supporters.'

Washburn University is condemning the “hate and misinformation” spread by a speaker the Washburn University College Republicans will host today, university president Jerry Farley said.

The speaker, Michael J. Knowles, will give a speech titled “Banning Transgenderism,” according to the College Republicans group, that will coincide with International Transgender Day of Visibility, celebrated March 31 of each year.

In his email to the campus community, Farley said a campus organization had invited a speaker “who has a history of inciting fear and distrust.”
