University of Michigan students told to stay home as virus variant cases climb

The University of Michigan and Washtenaw County Health Department are recommending that all students living on or near the Ann Arbor campus stay in place at their campus-area addresses through Feb. 7.

The recommendation is directed at UM undergraduate, graduate and professional students enrolled this winter and residing on or off campus in Washtenaw County, according to a release from the health department. Students are permitted to leave their residence only to participate in limited activities, including in-person classes, work or research that cannot be completed remotely, obtaining food and medical care and other approved activities, the release states.

The recommendation is in place immediately through 11:59 p.m. Feb. 7, but more stringent actions may be necessary if the outbreak continues to grow and additional variant clusters are identified, the release states.
