Reed College is promising free tuition nationwide to any student whose family earns less than $100,000 a year.

Reed announced in December that students in Oregon and Washington whose family income falls under that cap wouldn’t have to pay the hefty tuition at the private Portland liberal arts college. Tuition alone is estimated at $71,460 for next school year, and the total cost including room and board is about $90,000.

Starting in the fall of 2026, Reed plans to offer the same tuition waiver to eligible families nationwide, the college announced last week. About 8% of Reed students qualify for the promise in its first year and Dean of Admissions Milyon Trulove expects that could climb to 25% when the program is expanded for students in other states.
