The U.S. boasts six of the 10 best colleges internationally, according to the latest ranking from U.S. News & World Report.
The 2026-27 installment from the well-known (albeit controversial) publication featured over 2,250 colleges and universities from 105 countries.
Harvard, MIT and Stanford secured the top three spots, followed by Oxford and Cambridge. Schools were evaluated by their academic research performance, scholarly impact and international reputation, according to the ranking’s methodology.
The remaining colleges in the top 10 were as follows:

7. University of California Berkeley
8. Yale University
9. University College London (United Kingdom)
10. Columbia University
North America contained nearly half (24) of the top 50 schools. Canada represented just two of those spots. Europe contained 11 schools, followed by 10 in Asia and five in Australia.
“While major universities in China and South American countries show noticeably
stronger performances in our Best Global Universities rankings this year, U.S. schools
continue to rank disproportionately high,” LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News, said in a press release.

The ranking is welcome news for U.S. universities as visa restrictions and other federal policies have dampened international enrollment, which had begun to rebound after the pandemic.
Some U.S. universities are expanding branch campuses abroad to counteract immigration challenges and the forecasted demographic cliff on home soil.
“The U.S. leads in this type of international expansion with upward of 100 branch campuses in more than three dozen countries and counting,” Jones added.
Top universities by subject
U.S. News also ranked universities by specific subject areas, focusing on publications and citations and reputation.
