U.S. universities expended $83.7 billion for research and development (R&D) activities in FY 2019, according to the latest National Science Foundation (NSF) Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) rankings. That’s an increase of about $4.5 billion, or 5.7% over the prior year. The bulk of the R&D funds – $44.5 billion – came from federal agencies (53%), twice as much as from the next greatest source, which was $21.2 billion in funds from the institutions themselves (25%).
As it has for many years, Johns Hopkins University led the list of universities, based on their total R&D spending: Johns Hopkins’ dollar amount includes funding for the federal Applied Physics Laboratory, which received $1.725b in FY 19.
