More than a million college students changed schools last year — and the number is still climbing.
Nearly 1.2 million students transferred colleges in fall 2024 — a 4.4% increase from the previous year, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, a nonprofit organization that collects enrollment data from colleges and universities across the United States. Transfer students now represent roughly 13% of all non-first-year undergraduates, showing how common it has become for students to change institutions mid-degree.
Across the country, students are reconsidering where and sometimes whether they finish their degrees.
