Some of the best higher education books of 2024

The past year yielded another rich crop of books about higher education. Included in this year’s best volumes are books on HBCUs, standardized testing, free speech and institutional leadership in a time of crisis.

The Resilient University: How Purpose and Inclusion Drive Student Success, by Freeman A. Hrabowski, III with Peter H. Henderson, Lynne C. Schaefer & Philip J. Rous, is an insightful discussion of effective university leadership by one of the nation’s most well-regarded higher education leaders.

Building on an earlier work, The Empowered University, Hrabowski and his colleagues explore how their university—the University of Maryland, Baltimore County—and others navigated the twin challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and the racial unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd.
