In June Gregory L. Fenves assumed the role of president of The University of Texas at Austin. He had been provost and executive vice president since 2013. Fenves oversaw the creation of the Dell Medical School and launched a "Campus Conversation" intended to redefine the residential college experience in the 21st Century by identifying the […]
As the NBA season comes to a close, we are reminded of 10 year old Lebron James Jr., son of all-star Lebron James. Junior's basketball skills have already garnered NCAA attention which led to Lebron James Sr. declaring his son "already got some offers from colleges" and that "it should be a violation. Today's students are easily distracted in the classroom because of their need for stimulation. This need developed at an exponential rate during their formative years due to the accelerated growth of new technologies. Students use smartphones, smartwatches, computers, tablets, and so forth to stay connected to their world. This need to stay connected does not […]
It's an uncomfortable truth for colleges and universities—cheating happens. And by many accounts, it happens a lot. Although cheating isn't new, technology facilitates it and student culture more readily accepts it. With a possible data breach underway, the system's website was shut down immediately and […]
Commencement speakers have become another point of financial scrutiny in higher ed, with an annual flurry of students crying foul on both the person selected and fees incurred. Some colleges avoid charges by tapping their own faculty for the task (as University of Chicago has done since 1970). Others pursue prominent speakers willing to donate […]
Getting a spring cancellation from a confirmed commencement speaker—particularly a high-profile one—is a planning team's nightmare. Pepperdine University's Seaver College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences had Sir Anthony Hopkins lined up to speak for its May 2 commencement, but a scheduling conflict for the actor called for a new plan. To the rescue: health technology […]
