Colleges in Texas, and elsewhere, pitch in after Hurricane Harvey

Web Editor | September 27, 2017

Just as students were headed back to campuses in southeastern Texas in late August, Hurricane Harvey struck. Many higher ed institutions evacuated students, delayed classes and extended deadlines for class registration and tuition payments. As is common in the aftermath of a major storm, colleges that had minimal damage stepped up with disaster-relief supplies and […]

Fleet feats on college campuses

Dawn Papandrea | August 20, 2017

Without vehicle fleets, many higher ed institutions would function in gridlock. Facilities technicians wouldn't be able to go out and make repairs, and police would have difficulty patrolling. "Fleet is a vital part of keeping an entire organization moving," says Carlos Berriz, Florida International University's fleet manager. Yet the realities in higher ed vary from […]

Service-learning trip to Haiti fulfills its promise

Web Editor | June 21, 2016

Having just returned from my first trip to Haiti, I have been thinking a lot about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. The situation is appalling to most Americans because we take for granted an abundance of fresh, clean water at every turn. Indeed, one might argue that it is a triumph of Madison Avenue […]

Yet, within months the university opened its doors to more than 12,000 students and 5,000 faculty and staff for the spring […]

Attacking campus risk

August 26, 2015

With YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets, virtually nothing escapes the pubic's notice, and judgment. It's one reason higher education is paying much more attention to risk management now than in the past. There are also more risk-generating contingencies, such as mass shootings, and accountability standards, such as for the prevention of sexual […]

College data backup in the age of the cloud

Web Editor | August 23, 2015

In just three years, enrollment at Lone Star Community College grew by about 50 percent. The six-campus system, located in the north Houston metro area, now has more than 95,000 students and has experienced explosive data growth, as well—from 40 terabytes to 1.6 petabytes. A data collection that big is hard to imagine. But as […]

Keeping an eye on travel costs

Web Editor | April 22, 2015

Snow College's latest travel policy included new, logical restrictions. For example: Employees would be reimbursed only for for hotel stays on days that matched an event's agenda, and they could no longer expense a first-class airline seat. The Utah college got lots of comments—about three-quarters of them negative—when the regulations were posted for a 30-day […]
