Hunter Lewis had big plans for his Dec. 30 canoe trip out on Trinidad Bay in Humboldt County. The 21-year-old junior at California State University Long Beach was home in Blue Lake, California, for the holidays and had engineered an incredibly elaborate treasure hunt for his family and friends.

Lewis’ three-day hunt involved rappelling down a cliff, climbing up a railroad trestle and even decoding messages with an Ottendorf cipher, according to his father, Corey Lewis. More than 100 people followed the Instagram page where Lewis was making announcements about “The Lost Lewis Treasure.”
