Durham Technical Community College President Bill Ingram announced his retirement—after more than 35 years working at the North Carolina college. He has been president of Durham Tech since 2008 and will continue in that role until June 30, 2020, pending a successful search for a new leader. Read more.

David Walentas didn’t know anyone who had been to college when he was growing up. His father, a postal clerk, was paralyzed by a stroke when Walentas was young, so he and his brother were sent to live and work on a farm. But he knew college could be a path out of poverty, so he jumped at the chance to go to the University of Virginia on an ROTC scholarship. Now, the real estate developer is making that kind of leap possible for others—with a $100 million gift to UVA that will fund scholarships for outstanding students who are the first in their families to attend college.
