The Nevada System of Higher Education has updated its policy to expand student access to free and affordable course materials—a timely move as economic pressures grow amid rising tuition at several of the state’s colleges and universities.
The updated policy encourages Nevada institutions to prioritize electronic, free or low-cost instructional options, while leaving the final selection of course materials in the hands of faculty and departments.
To shape the new definitions, NSHE convened a systemwide working group of library leaders and instructional material experts. The group developed definitions for low-cost and no-cost materials, as well as broader terms including instructional material, open educational resources and library-licensed materials.
