Four tenured professors at Centenary University — including the president and vice president of the faculty union — were wrongfully let go in 2019 as the college tried to dodge a severe financial deficit, according to a lawsuit filed in state Superior Court.
The actions by the university’s administrators violated the professors’ constitutional rights as well as their tenure protections, which barred their termination except under extraordinary circumstances that the Hackettstown school failed to prove,the complaint states.
The suit also claims senior administrators and a former board of trustees chairman “illegally targeted” two of the professors, James Patterson and Carol Yoshimine, because they were older and a third because they identified as transgender.
