Mike Krause named executive director of Tennessee Higher Education Commission

Mike Krause has been appointed executive director of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission by Gov. Bill Haslam.

Krause now spearheads the state’s Focus On College and Student Success (FOCUS) Act. Krause served as executive director of Drive to 55, the state’s initiative to increase the percentage of state residents with a postsecondary degree or certificate. He also managed the launch of the Tennessee Promise scholarship and mentoring program.

Krause will continue to co-lead the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation, which administers state and federal student financial assistance programs, including state lottery scholarships.

  • Eloy Ortiz Oakley will now lead California’s 113-campus community college system. As the former head of the Long Beach Community College District, he helped craft a partnership with the city and local schools to encourage college enrollment and a program he’d like to emulate statewide.
  • Michael Poliakoff has been chosen as the new president of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, which works with a network of 21,000 trustees at 1,100 different schools to monitor academic standards and protect the free exchange of ideas on campuses. Poliakoff is a former university administrator.
  • Larissa Z. Tiedens will become the ninth president of Scripps College in Claremont, California. While senior associate dean of academic affairs at Stanford Graduate School of Business, Tiedens oversaw educational technology, executive education, case writing and faculty development, and designed the school’s leadership curriculum. —Ray Bendici
