Hampshire College is hitting another roadblock after its accreditors required the institution to show cause as to why it shouldn’t be placed on probation or see its accreditation withdrawn, according to a Tuesday announcement.
The college’s accreditor, the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), said the decision comes as a result of the institution not successfully growing enrollment; a land sale falling through; the college not being able to refinance a $21 million bond debt by September; and its declining unrestricted endowment that has been used to support operations.
Hampshire, in Amherst, has been struggling for years after nearly closing in 2019. While it has persevered through the challenges, the college hasn’t made it out safely just yet.
