Groundbreakings: College science building, business school, learning commons

Science and Innovation building

California State University, Dominguez Hills

The completion of a three-story, 91,000-square-foot building is scheduled for early 2020. The $82 million facility will serve the university’s Center for Innovation in STEM Education, physics, biology and chemistry programs. Wet and dry labs with bi-folding doors will connect to outside workshops.

Recycled exterior materials include an aluminum-composite rainscreen system, limestone plaster and aluminum-frame storefronts.

HGA (Los Angeles) is architect of record and CW Driver (Pasadena) is construction manager at risk.

Charles F. Dolan School of Business

Fairfield University

The business school at Fairfield, in Connecticut, will move to a new $40 million academic building. Features of the 80,500-square-foot facility include a financial trading room, data analytics lab, entrepreneurship center with ideation lab space, simulation room and 16 classrooms.

The facility, which will also house the Center for Applied Ethics, should open in fall 2019. The S/L/A/M Collaborative (Glastonbury, Connecticut) is serving as architect.

The Learning Commons

Three floors of the existing Grainger House will become a vertically connected education space. Set for completion in spring 2018, the $11 million project will include a new computer lab, business library, and finance and analytics lab. The Commons will also contain the Business Learning Center’s five classrooms with wireless displays.

UW-Madison selected design firm Potter Lawson (Madison), and MSR Design (Minneapolis) is serving as consultant and partner. Miron Construction (Neenah, Wisconsin) is handling construction.
