Facing $37M in funding cuts, Kansas colleges given broader latitude to fire employees

According to calculations from the Kansas Legislative Research Department, Gov. Laura Kelly’s budget as presented to state lawmakers last week amounts to a $37.4 million reduction in state general funding for higher education.

That $37.4 million figure is split between $33.4 million in cuts to the six state universities, $3.4 million to community and technical colleges, $249,000 to Washburn University (which is not governed by the state Regents system) and $227,000 to the state board office.

While those cuts will be partially softened by a $10.2 million addition to the Regents’ budget, that funding comes in place of a 2.5% salary increase other state employees, excepting university faculty and staff, would receive under Kelly’s proposal. University presidents said they felt “singled out” for reductions in Kelly’s budget.
