The hearing came amid a flurry of federal and state government petitions to remove the bachelor’s degree as a barrier. The Biden administration has kept a Trump-era executive order that reduces degree requirements in federal job postings. Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx, R-NC., sponsored a bill to increase skills-based recruiting for federal jobs that passed 422-2. And 14 states, including Maryland, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, have gotten rid of degree mandates.
This broad support was reflected in the tone of the hearing, which Representative Donald Norcross, D-NJ., described as “probably one of the most cooperative discussions we’ve had in here.”
