All four students said the last election was the first in which they were eligible to vote and noted they are still forming their political views. One student, Lincoln, who supported Trump in the last election, said the speech did not appear to win over new voters but was instead focused on “damage control,” adding that Democrats would need to gain seats in the midterms.
Despite coming from different ideological backgrounds and acknowledging they had voted for different candidates, the students engaged in what they described as respectful, civil discussion throughout the night. They also said political differences have strained some of their friendships, underscoring the broader tensions surrounding national politics.
