The campaign to end community college stigma

Those of us who work in America’s community colleges are having a moment. Perhaps it’s the fact that most of the approximately 1,100 community colleges in our country have now been around for more than half a century. It might be the high cost of higher education and the student debt crisis opening the minds of students and families for options other than “going away to school.” Additionally, national efforts such as the College Promise Campaign highlight the primary role of community colleges in addressing social and economic mobility. Regardless of the reason, the national discourse on community colleges is changing and intensifying. Thanks to the great work of thought leaders at community colleges, philanthropic organizations, and researchers, much of this coverage has been positive.
