Which institutions have the highest number of reported campus crimes?

Crimes reported in 2022 represent the highest jump since universities began compiling statistics on it due to the Clergy Act of 1990.

With the pandemic all but ending in 2022 and in-person events back in full swing, colleges, universities, faculty, students and nearly everyone had the opportunity to rejoice. However, crime began percolating back up the surface at an astonishingly similar rate, beating pre-pandemic levels, USA Today reports.

Over 38,000 criminal offenses, including homicides, sexual assault, robbery, burglary, auto theft, arson and aggravated assault, were reported in 2022, representing an 8% uptick in 2019. It represents the highest jump in reported campus crimes since universities began compiling statistics on it due to the Clergy Act of 1990.

Sexual offenses, a combination of rape and fondling, have the highest representation on this list. It made up more than a third of the 38,059 campus crimes committed.

The university with the highest number of criminal offenses in 2022 was the University of California – Berkeley, with 719. The most typical crime committed was motor vehicle theft, which made up over half (53%). Aggravated assault and burglary made up the second and third most commonly committed criminal offenses, respectively.

University Business accessed USA’s Campus Crime Tool to discern which universities were the biggest hotspots for criminal offenses. The tool provides institutions with a red designation if they had 145 or more campus crimes reported in 2022. Twenty-seven institutions from 16 states are featured.

California had seven universities on this list, the most of any state. Following that is Arizona with three and Ohio, Michigan and Texas with two. Eleven other states had one university feature on this list.

Stanford, Harvard, and Grand Canyon University (Ariz.) are the only three universities that are not public institutions featured here.

USA Today collected the data from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education.
