College watchdogs could have less bite under DeVos proposal, putting students at risk, advocates worry

The watchdogs whose stamp of approval is required for colleges to access federal student aid money will have more flexibility in how they oversee the schools, if rules proposed this week by the Department of Education take effect.

The proposals part of a months-long effort by the Department under Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to overhaul rules meant to hold higher education institutions accountable for providing a quality education.
