Another tough budget year facing region’s public higher ed system

While much of the state’s attention has been on fixing the public school funding formula this year, the public higher education system, also long underfunded, has been fighting for its share of the budget too.

For next fiscal year, at least, local public campuses are seeing little increase in their state funding in either the House or Senate versions of the fiscal 2020 state spending plan. The state universities – Fitchburg State and Worcester State – would get roughly 4 percent increases next year, while Quinsigamond Community College and Mount Wachusett Community College would get closer to 2 percent increases.
