UMass Trustees Request $502M In State Funding

Trustees at the University of Massachusetts have approved a $502 million budget request from the state for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

UMass President Robert Caret said the request approved in Worcester on Wednesday represents nearly half of the five-campus system's general educational expenses and is part of the university's goal of returning to a 50-50 split in funding between the state and students.

This year's $418 million funding represented about 45 percent of the general budget.

Caret says a 50-50 split is the norm nationwide. A decade ago, the state funded 63 percent of the university's general education budget.
