The inventor is now 25 years removed from his invention, a silver anniversary that will be celebrated today but perhaps not properly appreciated.
The invention took place at the University of Alabama in Huntsville through the tedious work of graduate student Jim Ashburn. And you've used that invention.
"If you've talked on a cell phone, your voice has gone through this material," Ashburn said. It's also used in gathering magnetic resonance images (MRIs).
To commemorate Ashburn's discovery, a marker will be unveiled today at 2 p.m. at Wilson Hall on the UAH campus.
