They're laughing it up at Columbia College Chicago

The goal is to teach students how to “study funny.” It is a new college degree program in comedy writing and performance about to be launched by Columbia College Chicago in collaboration with the Second City, the famed improv comedy troupe based in Chicago.

With the new program slated to start in the fall of 2013, Columbia College and the Second City said today they will jointly recruit students to pursue the degree.

The only other institution of higher learning with a similar program is believed to be the University of Southern California, which has a degree program in comedy writing and directing.

Columbia’s new program will be based in the college’s theater department, but parts of the core curriculum also will come from Columbia’s television department and the college’s arts, entertainment and media management program.
