With funds allocated by its Government of the Student Body (GSB), Iowa State University (ISU) is installing an 855-square-foot green roof atop its historic Memorial Union. The LiveRoof® Hybrid Green System from LiveRoof, LLC (Spring Lake, Mich.) was selected for the project.
Roof Top Sedums, LLC (Davenport, Iowa), a LiveRoof® licensed regional grower and distributor, is growing plants for the Memorial Hall green roof. The colorful plant palette for the ISU project features four mixes of hardy, drought-tolerant groundcover plants, which display a variety of colors and textures, even during the fall and winter months. Roof Top Sedums and Central States Roofing (Ames, Iowa), a LiveRoof® certified installer, will oversee the installation by student volunteers.
ISU senior Miles Thompson, who studies horticulture with an emphasis in landscape design, has a strong interest in green roof technology and advocated for the project. When he learned that a green roof had been planned for the Memorial Union, but funding had not been approved, he took it upon himself to bring the issue to the GSB.
