Domino’s Pizza Inc. President and CEO J. Patrick Doyle gave a pop quiz Monday to the 350 officials from business, education and government who attended the Business Leaders for Michigan higher education summit at the Lansing Center.
The ultimate lesson, said Doyle and other speakers at the “Growing a Higher Education Marketplace” summit: Dwindling state funding for universities could have far-reaching economic impact.
Doyle, the event’s keynote speaker, asked the crowd to identify two unnamed states based on data such as population, tax revenue, unemployment rate, prison population and university enrollment.
The statistics for the two states — which turned out to be Michigan and North Carolina — were essentially the same until it came to governmental spending on corrections and public universities.
