Going Green While Saving Green: When Trash Reign Supreme

Going Green While Saving Green: When Trash Reign Supreme

It was a close-fought battle, but in the end Cal State, San Marcos prevailed over Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) and Kalamazoo College (Mich.) to take the Grand Champion award in RecycleMania 2006. In the past six years, more and more institutions have been participating in this friendly competition aimed at promoting recycling and waste reduction. The rules are simple: Schools compete over a 10-week period to see who can collect the largest amount of recyclables, the least amount of trash, and have the highest recycling rate. All participants issue weekly progress reports, measured in pounds. The institution that recycles the most wins. Prizes include RecycleMania trophies and awards, as well as ever-valuable positive media coverage.

Eighty-seven institutions participated in different contests, such as the "Per Capita Classic," to see which school collects the largest amount of acceptable recyclables per person, and "Waste Minimization," to determine which school produces the least amount of municipal solid waste (including both recyclables and trash) per person.

Schools that participate in both are eligible to become the Grand Champion of RecycleMania. The Grand Champion is the school that, based on their combined results, demonstrates the greatest achievement in both source reduction and recycling.

RecycleMania also recognizes "Targeted Material" recycling efforts, such as bottles and cans, corrugated, food service organics, and paper. Awards are given to schools that lead the pack in the amount of specific materials collected.
